Special-needs children put extra pressure on working parents

By CINDY KRISCHER GOODMAN - McClatchy Newspapers ESPN commentator and former tennis star Mary Joe Fernandez remembers the day she learned her son had asthma. "It was like a wake-up call that threw me into action," Fernandez said. She realized she would need to become ultra-organized to keep up travel for her broadcasting job, find the best asthma treatments and manage her son's medical needs. "I came up with an action plan that I leave behind with his school, or baby-sitter, or my parents so when I travel they know what to do." Fernandez just recently started to talk openly about her son's illness, even during a recent tennis clinic for children at the U.S. Open in New York to raise awareness and empower other parents. Despite their fears about job security, more parents of children with chronic illnesses and disabilities are opening up - even at work. Stem Cell Treatment Doing Wonders For Autistic Glenburn Boy

Kenneth was the first child in Maine, and one of of less than a hundred nationwide, to receive the umbilical cord blood as a treatment for autism. But that didn't scare the Kelleys. "We were excited for his future and we kenneth were scared of a life for him without stem cells and what the future would hold with just autism and no hope," says Marty Kelley. The family is heading to Central America for another round of the same treatment. They're hoping the improvements they've seen are just the beginning. "It looks like the sky's the limit," she says, "especially with the reading, I never thought I'd see it happen. He's also doing simple math problems. Zach's Balances & Dances with Dad

Zachary loves music, so I turned on the ol' speakers with to rock out to some classic rock. He got so excited! When he's excited, his tone shows, so his whole body gets really stiff. On camera with special needs kids

The Charlan's were featured in their local paper.. Zachary Charlan is only 3 years old, but he is already used to being in front of the camera. Local Paper Nathan and Zach "He hams it up and puts on this big goofy smile," said his father, Nathan Charlan.
