Having a daughter with special needs who is now nearly an adult, I know we have gone through equipment and that is no longer the right size or need anymore for our daughter. Seeing how insurance only usually covers a small portion of our needs for equipment and seeing how we currently have wheelchairs that are no longer suitable and standers that our daughter has outgrown I am wondering about the feasability of an exchange system. Sometimes you can pay a lot for something that really doesn't turn out to work well for your child...then what do you do with it? I am thinking maybe we should have a part of this site dedicated to equipment exchange/donation/sale?
Paying for shipping or perhaps finding someone within driving distance with something you could purchase could definitely be a money saver. If I knew someone who could use the equipment we have, I would probably be willing to give it away!
We think this is a great idea Janet! We have had many discussions with our web team about how to do this and how fast we can get something like this up and running. We are in the works right now and will let you know as soon as we have more info. Let us know if you have any ideas or details to share about doing this well.
I haven't found anything like this in Oklahoma yet, but I do know there are some AWESOME resources for this in Colorado. Kids Mobility Network is one that comes to mind right away. I would have given anything to have them here in Oklahoma this summer while we have struggled and I have had to carry Tyler everywhere since we are still waiting on a walker or wheelchair and the MDA closet had nothing they could even loan us. We also had talked with our PT in Colorado about getting him an adaptive bike through Two Angels but now that we are out of state I don't know if that can even happen and we were so looking forward to it :( I would be glad to help set up something like this for our region in Oklahoma if something gets started!
www.atxchange.org is one we have in Michigan. Anyone can join!
